Have you ever wanted to play “Mad Scientist” with your makeup? Seriously, though, how many of us have bought a face product, and wished we could simply tint it slightly darker, slightly lighter, pinker, or more yellow? I know that I have personally found some fantastic foundations, concealers, and powders out there, wishing I could simply tweak the color slightly to match my skin tone flawlessly. LUSH Cosmetics has created Colour Supplements, which allow you to do so now. To read more about this brand new (and super innovative) product,
LUSH Cosmetics Colour Supplements
LUSH Colour Supplements are perfect for giving an even, flawless look to your skin. They will help cover up blemishes, tone down redness, and even out any imperfections, similar to a foundation. They can be used by themselves as a normal foundation for more intense coverage, or they can be mixed with your favorite facial moisturizer for a lighter, more dewy finish. Each Colour Supplement is made with red rose petal infusion to calm redness, and glycerine to help your skin retain moisture. Also, these are mineral-oil free, which is a big deal. Most foundations contain mineral oil, which can cause acne, tiny bumps on the skin, as well as allergic reactions.
LUSH Colour Supplements currently come in four shades that are meant to cover all ranges of skin complexion shades: Light Pink, Dark Pink, Light Yellow, and Dark Yellow. While I was at my LUSH store (shout-out for the fantastic service at the Menlo Park LUSH in New Jersey), I was advised to go with both dark pink, and dark yellow, since my skin tone tends to change throughout the seasons. I have a very olive skin tone, making me have yellow undertones, but the dark yellow looked a tad too chalky on its own, so once I mixed in some of the dark pink with it, it matched my skin tone flawlessly. Throughout the year, depending on how tan I am, I can add more of one shade and less of another, basically playing mad scientist with my makeup!
Colour Supplements are meant to be mixed with your favorite facial moisturizer, whether it be a LUSH moisturizer, or one you’ve used and loved forever. You can also wear these alone, without mixing them with a moisturizer, for concentrated coverage, especially if you have bad acne, blemishes, or uneven skin tone. For the summer, I have been mixing these together with my daily facial moisturizer. I love this task, because I feel like I am creating my own tinted moisturizer, in my own 100% customizable shade. And that is because I am!
So here is where I will demonstrate how you can play mad scientist with your makeup. With clean fingers and hands, I put a bit of moisturizer on the back of my hand, along with a tiny bit of the dark yellow and the dark pink Colour Supplements.
At this point, you want to start mixing in the colors with your moisturizer as you see fit. You can always go back and add more of one shade, or add more moisturizer to make the color more sheer. The possibilities are endless, and completely customizable.
The formula on the Colour Supplements is fantastic. They have great coverage alone, so you only need a tiny bit, and when mixed with a moisturizer, their coverage is that of a really well-done tinted moisturizer. The formula feels soothing and light on your skin, and throughout the few weeks I have been using these, I have not had any breakouts or reactions at all.
My only concern with this product is that LUSH only offers four shades as of right now. Not every woman who shops at and loves LUSH Cosmetics is going to fit into Light/Dark Pink and Light/Dark Yellow. Those with dark skin, or extremely pale skin will not find this product usable at all, and it would be lovely to see LUSH appeal to women of different skin tones, on a much broader scale.
Bottom Line: If you’ve ever wanted to take hold of a cosmetics lab and mix your own foundation/concealer shades to match your complexion flawlessly, LUSH Colour Supplements are for you. The formula has great coverage and can be customized to your liking. The only downside of this product is for beauties who are extremely pale or dark skinned, as the range of shades is currently limited.
