Maybelline released a collection of pearl inspired lipsticks and lip glosses called ColorSensational “The Pearl Collection.” I was initially very skeptical because frosty tones do not typically complement me well, and I just generally do not prefer them. I had heard so much in the beauty blogging world about “Pearly Pink,” the famous color from this collection, and I was curious to try it for myself. While the “Pearly Pink” lipstick was all sold out, I went for the lip gloss instead, my reasoning being that I typically wear gloss more than lipstick every day anyway. Want to see the results?
Pearly Pink is a nude toned baby-doll pink lip gloss, with loads of shimmer in it. The effect, however, is more shimmery than “frosty” which I think makes this product appeal to more people.
As far as the actual formula in this product, I have to say that the gloss was completely non-sticky. If there is one thing that turns me off to a lip gloss, it’s a really goopy, sticky formula. The one thing I did notice about this gloss, though, is that I could feel the “pearl” particles in the gloss. The bits of micro-glitter and shimmer that make the lip gloss so shimmery and shiny make the lip gloss feel a bit gritty on your lips, which I was not a huge fan of.
The color was much better than I was expecting, since I was thinking “1980’s frost” when I saw the display of this collection. In the advertisements, Christy Turlington is wearing “Pearly Pink,” lipstick, and it looks absolutely fantastic on her (Isn’t it funny how that works?). I was pleased that the color wasn’t too frosty, but definitely more on the reflective pearl side, as Maybelline claims. Do I foresee myself loving this lip gloss like crazy? Probably not. I do feel the color washes my medium olive skin tone out a bit, and only works with the right eye and cheek makeup. I would, however, absolutely give the “Pearly Pink” lipstick a try, as I think it would suit me much better. The pearlescent glow this shade gives off is more dramatic in lip gloss form (think: LOOK AT MY LIPS), whereas the lipstick is a bit more demure and understated.
Maybelline ColorSensational Lip Gloss in “Pearly Pink,” retails for $7.99 and can be found at your local drugstore, as well as mass retailers such as Target, Walmart, and Ulta. The Maybelline ColorSensational “The Pearl Collection” is composed of many varying shades in both lipstick and lip gloss form, and I encourage you to check them out, as there seems to be a shade for everyone, not just pearly pink!
