This nail polish collection has been one of the top collections I’ve had on my radar for early 2011. The limited edition OPI Katy Perry Collection contains five nail polishes: Teenage Dream, Not Like The Movies, The One That Got Away, Last Friday Night, and Black Shatter. Four of the five are named after songs on Katy Perry’s newest album, which I personally love. Much to my husbands chagrin, her album has been on my repeat play-list for the past few months. Katy Perry has a very unique style to her – one that I admire, because she never apologizes for it. She is part fun, part pin-up, part flirty, and part kitsch. This nail collection perfectly captures her personality, as well as the personality of the songs they are named after. The grand finale is “Black Shatter,” which has an incredibly cool and unique shatter effect when applied. To see the full collection and swatches,
Teenage Dream is a cotton candy pink with large chunks of holographic glitter in it. The pink is somewhat sheer, and what you see above is two coats. This one perfectly depicts the song, with her album cover having cotton candy on it. The song is happy and warm, just like this shade. The cotton candy pink color is extremely gorgeous on the nails, and it helps give the glitter sort of a “grown up” vibe. Gorgeous.
Last Friday Night is a sheer bright blue with large holographic glitter, and is very similar to Teenage Dream, only in blue. I fully expected this color to be bright and fun because the song is all about going overboard on the weekend and living it up. The application of the blue color was quite sheer, much more sheer than Teenage Dream was, and it was slightly goopy. What you see above is two coats…with 3-4 coats, you will get a much more opaque blue glitter out of this.
The One That Got Away is a berry fuchsia with a ton of sheen to it, and a slight orange/bronze duo-chrome. If you look at the bottle in both photographs, you can see the twinges of orange/bronze sheen to it. This color is very pretty, although not necessarily extremely unique. This song of Katy’s is about an early love that slipped through our fingers, and the memories we have of that time. I think this color depicts love lost very well.
Not Like The Movies is a metallic gray duo-chrome that flashes purple and green. In the first photograph, you can see in the sunshine that it looks mostly gray, however, when brought inside with a camera flash, you can see how this shade shines. This ended up being a surprise favorite of mine! It applied incredibly smooth and opaque in just two coats, and I love the duo-chrome look it has. This song also happens to be one of my favorites on Katy Perry’s album, as it is a beautiful love song that just enchants you into realizing what true love is. This shade to me depicts the song perfectly because it has a Cinderella princess-esque fluff to it.
And now for the grand finale of the collection…
Black Shatter is a black nail polish that literally “shatters” on your nails when applied over another nail polish. Simply amazing. I love how edgy and funky this look is, and it totally screams Katy Perry! I applied this polish over Not Like The Movies, and this was the final result. Simply wait for any nail polish shade to dry, then apply one coat of “Black Shatter” over top of it. Within seconds you will see the black polish start to “shrink” and “crackle” into a pattern, with each nail having its own unique look. The black shatter effect dries matte, so you’ll want to use a nice, long-lasting top coat for shine and to seal it in. This polish is sure to gather tons of compliments and questions. I spend hours just testing “Black Shatter” over various other nail polish colors in my collection! The possibilities are endless. This polish gives you an incredible nail art look without the hard work and effort. I remember being a teenager, and there was a black polish that was supposed to “crack” onto your nails like this. However, since the technology wasn’t as advanced back then, the effect was nowhere near as cool as it is now.
Bottom Line: Every single polish in this collection applied well, with the exception of Last Friday Night which was slightly thick. Black Shatter is the winner of the collection, offering an edgy and unique look to your nails with innovative technology. Whether you are a Katy Perry fan, or simply just want to funkify your nails, this collection is sure to please!
