Earlier this afternoon, I decided to play a fun social experiment and post a picture of myself wearing this Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick in “Poe” on my Facebook. You wouldn’t believe some of the reactions I got! You would have thought that I went out and got a Mike Tyson facial tattoo with the way people were acting. This color is bold and it makes a statement, but remember, it’s just lipstick and you can wipe it off whenever you want. I personally love to experiment with bolder, brighter, edgier makeup items because to me, makeup is art. It’s all in good fun and if dark blue lipstick makes you happy, then go for it fearlessly. Poe has been wildly popular from Kat Von D’s new lipstick line, with the shade being sold out in many Sephora locations and even online. I, myself, searched high and low for this shade in the Sephora at the Water Tower in Chicago while I was visiting last week. I ended up purchasing mine for a small mark-up fee on eBay, and ironically the seller was from Chicago! I’ve got full swatches and what I paired this bold lipstick with inside,
Poe is a dark navy blue with a bright violet shimmer in it. Holy gorgeousness. You have to check this one out in person to truly get the effect, although the photograph above really captures how multidimensional it is. It’s extremely pigmented and opaque, so just a few swipes will put down deep, rich color. The formula on this one was great, with a satin, almost matte finish to it. You can feel the shimmer in it slightly with a gritty effect, but it’s not bad at all.
Poe really looks different depending on the lighting you’re in, as well. In artificial or dim lighting it tends to look darker and more violet. In natural lighting, sunlight, and with flash, you really notice the shimmer in it and how navy blue the color is.
I paired Poe with a neutral, classic eye look that anyone can pull off. I kept the eyes somewhat simple and doll-like to offset the vampy lips. Here’s how to achieve it:
- Apply a matte light peach into the socket of your eye and blend it upward toward your brow-bone. This is going to be your transition color that peeks out and also will help soften that deeper crease shade. I personally used Inglot’s Eyeshadow in #368. Just try to use a matte shade if possible so you keep the eye toned down.
- Apply a deep brown or plum shade into the crease of your eye only. I used the Anastasia Beverly Hills Amrezy Palette for this and the shade “Deep Plum” in just the crease. Go back and forth a few times with your fluffy blending brush and repeat step #1 if you need to, to create a beautifully soft transition.
- Apply a shimmering champagne beige shade on the eyelid and along the lower lash-line. I used “Glisten” from the Amrezy Palette for this.
I kept my eyes looking big and bright by applying a flesh-toned eyeliner on my lower water-line. I used a black felt tip liner on my upper lash-line and flicked it out into a cat-eye. If you have natural looking false eyelashes, use them here! They will make your eyes look even more round and doll-like.
This is a super classic eye makeup look that can be paired with any lip color in the entire world. I just really love it against a dark, vampy, gothic color like Poe.
I kept the rest of my face very neutral. I used a matte finish foundation and only highlighted the tops of my cheekbones. I contoured my cheeks, forehead, jawline, and nose and applied a neutral brown blush to my cheeks. The key to keeping this look fun and edgy, but not overly dramatic is to keep that face looking very neutral and basic.
You can see just how blue Poe looks in natural daylight. In dim lighting and under artificial lights, it looks much more dark and violet-toned.
And hey, if blue lipstick just isn’t your thing, that’s cool too. You know I like to switch things up around here and I’m never afraid of change or creating a dramatic look.
Overall, I love Poe and highly recommend it to anyone who is thinking of trying it. I also bought another shade from Kat Von D’s Studded Kiss Lipstick line, and it has a wonderful, long-lasting formula to it as well.
Kat Von D’s Studded Kiss Lipstick in Poe is available at Sephora stores and Sephora’s website nationwide. Each lipstick retails for $21.00 USD. There are thirty shades total, so there’s something for everyone in the collection.
