As a photographer, lighting is single-handedly the most important aspect of a photograph. It can capture a magical twinkling Christmas tree during the holiday season or shiny green pine material known as the artificial Christmas tree. Lighting can cast perfect shadows during a portrait, recreate a certain mood or human emotion, or completely change the way your artistic vision looked. As a makeup artist and beauty blogger, the art comes from using products on my face, and good lighting is dire. Have you ever tried to do your makeup in a dim room? You may be horrified to look at your makeup in natural lighting afterward. Imagine my surprise when I was tasked with giving my vanity area a lighting makeover and I realized all this time I had been doing my makeup in terrible lighting! GE Reveal Light Bulbs are a brand new product for Fall 2013. By January 2014, traditional incandescent light bulbs will no longer be manufactured in the United States due to their energy inefficiency and changing energy regulations. I’m testing out and using the 75W halogen bulbs in this lighting makeover. You will be shocked at the before and after photographs inside!

The new LED bulbs provide the same benefits of all GE reveal light bulbs including:
- filtering out dull yellow rays of most bulbs, enhancing the colors and patterns within your home
- providing crisp white light that brings out colors, making whites appear whiter, reds redder, and allows patterns throughout your home to pop
- filling rooms with enhanced, vivid surrounding light
GE reveal® LED light bulbs also are the best energy-efficient light bulbs available, lasting more than a decade based on three hours of use each day. They are offered in 40- and 60-watt replacements, as well as a popular BR-30 shape for recessed fixture down-lighting.
MY VANITY LIGHTING MAKEOVER
BEFORE:
This is my vanity before I switched out my light bulbs. My vanity area is probably my favorite spot in the house. When I sit down there, I’m in my own little world, enjoying testing out makeup products and trying on new looks. I always thought my lighting was decent before this makeover. I have two bulbs in clip-on lighting fixtures on each side of my table that shine directly on me. The lighting is warm. Too warm. It looks, well…artificial. It wasn’t until I took my light bulbs out and replaced them with GE Reveal light bulbs that I realized how badly I needed this lighting makeover…
To my surprise, my lighting looks completely different. Not just on camera, but as soon as I switched the new bulbs on. It looks more like daylight in my room and the bulbs are much less warm and artificial looking. I was shocked. How could my lighting have been so bad before? Why did I not use GE Reveal light bulbs sooner? Has my makeup application suffered all this time as a result? I was especially curious as to how I looked in my vanity mirror. I wanted to see what my skin looked like and how my skin tone changed.
I snapped this picture with the new GE Reveal light bulbs, and I actually look like I’m shooting in pure, natural light. I was really impressed with how awesome my skin tone looked and how true to color everything was. I almost felt like I had just gotten glasses for the first time and was finally seeing the world with clarity!
Here are some side-by-side comparison shots so you can see the dramatic difference in lighting:
Goodbye dull, yellow lighting that is far too warm! Hello gorgeous, clear lighting that is true to color.
At this point, there will be no other light bulb brand going back into these lights in the future. GE Reveal has stolen my heart and won it over with this lighting makeover. You can purchase these bulbs at mass retailers nationwide, and find out more information about the bulbs at www.gelighting.com/reveal.
