I was having a moment the other day when I just didn’t feel like slapping on another shade of coral, pink, or nude lipstick. Sometimes in the spring and summer I just like to go completely off the wall and do a nice dark, vampy, sultry lip. It’s unexpected and it can be incredibly sexy when done right. I chose a shade in my collection that is very affordable, so everyone can go out and find it. I used Wet n Wild’s MegaLast Lip Color in 916D – Ravin’ Raisin. It’s this really rich, opaque brownish-violet shade that is quite flattering to a variety of skin tones. I often hear many people say they are intimidated by a dark lip like this one, so I’m going to show you what I paired it with and give you some tips and tricks.

For the eye makeup, I went with something equally as vampy, but nothing overly dramatic. I specifically lined both the top lash-line and the lower water-line so that my eye color popped. I patted a light grey eyeshadow over my entire eyelid and along my lower lash-line. I love the way the eyeliner around the entire eye looks with a dark lip. As long as you keep the cheek color neutral, you can indeed play up both your eyes and your lips at the same time.

For the lips, I outlined them with a dark brown lip pencil first. This is an important step when using a really dark, dramatic lip color like this one. It helps you to shape your lips perfectly before filling them in with the lipstick and also helps prevent feathering. After I lined them, I applied the lipstick straight from the tube. This lipstick is super pigmented, so one coat was more than enough to put down great color. If you have to, go back and clean up any edges with a small brush and concealer. Often times with lip shades this dark, you will need to clean up little mistakes around the edges. You want a super crisp lip line.

For the face, the simpler the better. You want the skin to be as perfected as possible. I used medium coverage foundation and concealer to get rid of any redness or blemishes. I contoured my face and used a neutral brown blush on the apples of my cheeks. The face makeup should not compete with the lips and eyes here, so neutral is what works!
