I will never forget how embarrassing it was to wear shorts, skirts, or dresses a few summers ago. My calves were scratched up and left with scabs so badly that people would stop and ask me what happened or if I had a pet that was clawing me. The truth is, I learned, I have very sensitive skin. The skin on my body easily breaks out into rashes or hives if it touches something unnatural or irritating, and my shaving cream was no different. I would shave my legs and by nighttime, I’d be itching my legs so badly that I’d make myself bleed by accident. It was an intense burning sensation that almost had me making an appointment at the dermatologist, because I was sure that something was wrong with me. So I switched to Kiss My Face Moisture Shave, which I first purchased at my local Whole Foods. I shaved my legs and waited all night for the itching and burning, but it never came. Inside, I’ve got tips on how to minimize shaving irritation, especially for sensitive skin, and a review of my all-time favorite natural shaving cream (and savior).

Kiss My Face Moisture Shave is free of: parabens, SLS, phthalates (nasty things that disrupt your hormones, ladies!), artificial colors, preservatives, and animal ingredients. It’s also cruelty-free. It is enriched with aloe, olive oil, and botanicals such as lemongrass and orange flower. The specific scent I am reviewing today is “Peaceful Patchouli,” which is a light, earthy, musky scent. It is made specifically for sensitive skin, and it’s also travel friendly in size at 3.4oz, so you can throw it in your carry-on bag!
So why is using natural shaving cream or lotion so important? Well, let’s start off by exploring what shaving actually does to the skin. Yes, it removes hair, but it’s also exfoliating your dead skin cells, opening your pores and hair follicles in the process. When you shave with products that have chemicals, preservatives, animal ingredients, as well as unnatural fragrances and colors in them, you’re exposing all of these into a deeper part of your skin and body. Think of it like this: If you cut your skin artificially and had an open wound, you’d be especially careful not to get various liquids and especially harmful chemicals into it, since it is an open wound. The same thing happens when you shave your legs.
Kiss My Face Moisture Shave was a game-changer for me. Before Kiss My Face came along, my legs would feel fine during and right after I shaved, but then hours later I’d feel like I wanted to tear the skin off my legs with my nails because it was so itchy and irritated. The hair follicles actually felt inflamed on my legs. After using Kiss My Face for the first time, I waited and waited for my legs to become irritated, but all I felt was silky smooth skin on my legs that felt non-irritated. I was so pleased and I was also sure that it had to be a mistake. How could my one and only solution be the shaving cream I was using?
It turns out that whatever nasty chemicals and artificial ingredients were in my shaving cream were causing a major reaction not only on my skin, but inside my skin, underneath the hair follicle. Not to mention, once I realized that I was exposing myself to those yucky ingredients, I decided that I would never use another shaving cream. Kiss My Face Moisture Shave has genuinely been a life saver for me. I’ve gone through so many containers, and I have watched the skin on my legs heal since last year. I still have faint scars that are a reminder of just how itchy and irritated my legs used to be, but all I can do is learn from the experience and be thankful I found an all-natural product that helped rid the problem.
Things You Can Do To Minimize Shaving Irritation:
- Always use warm water. Hot water may feel good but it leads to further skin irritation and can leave your skin red and inflamed while shaving.
- Soak your skin before shaving if possible. If you can wait until the end of your shower or bath to shave, it will make shaving much easier and reduce irritation and razor burn.
- Invest in a good blade. I, of all people, know what it feels like to want to use the cheapest possible shaving razors from the store. They are all incredibly expensive, but if you invest in one with multiple blades that actually works for you, your skin will thank you for it. An effective razor means you don’t have to go over the area on your skin as often and less nicks.
- Use an all-natural shaving cream. This was my main problem before. I tried all my other tips in this list but still wasn’t seeing an improvement. Once I started using Kiss My Face, my issues went away.
- Moisturize well after shaving. This is an important, often overlooked step. Moisturize your skin when you are done so that you can keep the skin you just exfoliated healthy and strong. If possible, use something all-natural since your skin is still very “new” and your pores and hair follicles may still be open.
Keep in mind that you may not have sensitive skin on your body now, but could develop an allergy in the future. Growing up, I never had sensitive skin on my body. In my twenties, I started getting hives from certain laundry detergents, and had to be really careful what soaps and body washes I used. The shaving cream was a seemingly obvious step that was right in front of me and I missed the signs until I really started to feel the pain from itching and scratching so much.
Overall, I highly recommend Kiss My Face Moisture Shave. It’s the #1 natural shaving product on the planet for a reason. The formula looks like a liquid soap at first, but once combined with water, it creates a gorgeous lather that feels so thick and protective. It really solved my irritation problems and I no longer have to feel embarrassed about walking around in shorts, skirts, and dresses all spring and summer long now.
