When I found out that MAC was expanding their Retro Matte Lipstick Collection, I was super psyched. I absolutely love matte lipstick. Not only is the finish super modern and trendy, but it lasts for hours upon hours on your lips. Unfortunately, I got to the collection too late to grab the purple shade I wanted, so I scooped up Relentlessly Red instead. It’s actually quite a unique shade in that it looks red but it’s actually a really bright coral shade. You’ll be left wondering whether it’s actually hot red or hot coral many times over, but it’s truly a beautiful color for a variety of skin tones.
I first fell in love with MAC’s Retro Matte Lipstick when I tried RiRi Woo, Rihanna’s collaboration lipstick with MAC. The formula is quite dry, but once it goes on your lips, it stays put for hours upon hours. The finish is very matte which is edgy, sophisticated, and sexy. I love the way matte lips look with nothing except some mascara.
Relentlessly Red is described as a “bright pinkish coral matte” shade. It’s one of those colors that looks like a flaming hot coral and then looks like a hot, bright red. It’s an incredibly flattering shade, especially for those who are scared to try really fiery hot reds. The coral pink tones in it keep it playful, fun, and flattering to the complexion.
Like most matte lipsticks, this is a bit dry feeling. I don’t mind the dryness of matte lipstick because the finish makes the lipstick last much longer. As long as you make sure to have your lips prepped well (no chapped lips!), you will be fine. This lipstick does accentuate any dryness you might have.
Overall, I love this shade. I love this shade coupled with the matte, flat finish. It keeps the look modern and sophisticated, instead of very teenybopper or adolescent. This is a great color that wavers in between coral and red. It’s a fairly unique shade that I don’t have in my collection, since most of my lipsticks are either flat out coral or very much red.
MAC’s Retro Matte Collection is available on their website right now. Each lipstick retails for $15.00 USD each. Many of the shades are sold out, but Relentlessly Red is still available here. The collection launches in stores September 12th, 2013. I think I may find myself at my local MAC counter scooping up the purple shade I missed online, “Flat Out Fabulous.” I definitely recommend these Retro Matte Lipsticks!
