The Urban Decay Black Palette consists of six black-based eyeshadows, a travel size primer potion in Eden, and a travel size 24/7 eye pencil in “Zero,” a classic black. I had several requests for this palette, and I tend to be into darker shades of eyeshadow that are a little bit more “rock and roll,” so I figured this palette would be good for me. Did this palette live up to my expectations? To see more photographs and swatches,
To start off, when I received this palette from Sephora, it was dusty/dirty, and one of the eyeshadows had cracked. I felt disheartened because there is no Sephora for over an hour here where I live, and I didn’t want the hassle of having to send it back and wait. Sephora has flawless customer service, however, and offered to send a replacement to me. Kudos to Sephora for your consistent excellent customer service!
The palette packaging itself is nice. It’s not overdone, it’s a simple black, thin palette, that has edgy silver sparkles in it. Inside, you will find six eyeshadows, as well as a travel-size 24/7 eyeliner pencil in their classic black, “Zero.”
The shades inside this palette are all black-based jewel tones. Each shade has an edgy, intense appeal to it that makes this entire palette very “rockstar.” The addition of a travel size Urban Decay Primer Potion in “Eden,” is a nice touch as well, because their primer potion is one of my favorites. Eden is a matte nude primer for your eyes, to make your eyeshadow more vibrant, and prevent any wear or creasing.
Before swatching the shades on my hand, I applied a thin, even layer of “Eden” all over the back of my hand so you can see how the eyeshadow looks with a nice matte base underneath.
The six eyeshadow shades in this palette are:
- Black Dog, richest black matte
- Sabbath, black with blue sparkly shift
- Barracuda, black with silver sparkly shift
- Cobra, black with golden sparkly shift
- Jet, black with purple sparkly shift
- Libertine, black with emerald sparkly shift
My overall opinion of this palette is that it’s definitely pretty. The eyeshadow shades are extremely pigmented, and most of them have a gorgeous glimmer to them. I do think it is a bit of a reach by Urban Decay to call these shades “black with a (insert shade here) shift.” While the colors are dark, and have black based hues to them, they are more dark jewel tones than anything else. The shades are great for the fall and winter, and for those of us who like to wear slightly edgy, punchier colors on our eyes. The standout shade for myself, personally, was “Cobra.” The golden glimmer in the black/olive base was absolutely stunning, and definitely a color I will be wearing often. Overall, I’d say if you’re an Urban Decay fan, or you simply enjoy dark eyeshadow, this is a good pick for you. If you’re not, it’s something that you may want to skip.
