Lookbook: Maybelline EyeStudio Color Explosion Eyeshadow Palette, “Amethyst Ablazed,” Photographs & Swatches

By now it is no secret how much I love Maybelline EyeStudio Palettes. A simple browse through the Maybelline posts I’ve done on Beauty Gala will show you that I own almost all of the quad’s, and I adore using them for their rich pigmentation and soft texture. So of course, there I am in the drugstore, and I see a brand new set of Maybelline EyeStudio palettes. Never get between a purple lover and purple products…I grabbed Amethyst Ablaze which contains gorgeous shades of violet. To see photographs, swatches, and what I think of these new EyeStudio palettes,

Amethyst Ablazed is a gorgeous palette of five eyeshadow shades. 4 of the shades are various tones of purple, and there is a gorgeous shimmering silver eyeshadow at the top of the palette which can be placed over any of the other shades. Make no mistake, when I saw these palettes in the drugstore, I had a difficult time choosing which one I wanted to buy. I genuinely thought they were all stunning and I wanted every single one. I believe there were five or six different palettes (blue, green, browns, and a pink one from my memory). However, the price of these seemed a little steep to me. Each palette retails for $10 or $10.99, depending on where you purchase it from. While I have had great experiences with the Maybelline EyeStudio line, I wasn’t ready to shell out $50 or more on every single palette. One of the things that made the original Maybelline EyeStudio Color Plush Quad’s so amazing and popular was how brilliantly priced they were…around $6 a palette. This palette has five shades versus four, however, they are around the same volume of product, so I was surprised to see how steep the price tag was. After swatching this one, I am sure I will go back for the rest slowly, but I do wish Maybelline would lower the price on these because I’d like to own them all!

The five shades in this palette, clockwise from top: Shimmering opalescent silver, semi-matte dark purple plum, shimmering grape purple (cool-toned, and much more purple in real life), shimmering champagne-lavender, and shimmering pink-purple.

Shimmering silver, Matte Plum

The shimmering silver shade is opalescent and gorgeous. It’s the perfect color to pat on top of any other color eyeshadow for a pop of glittery sparkle. It’s actually very pigmented, and has a sheer base, so it really has little to no fallout when using it over another shadow. The semi-matte plum shade is quite gorgeous, as well. I originally thought it was completely matte, but when the flash hit it, it showed very tiny bits of bright purple shimmer in it.

The pink-purple and cool-toned grape shade are both shimmery and beautiful. They have great pigmentation, and were super soft. I like that Maybelline mixed cool-toned and warm-toned purples in this palette because they are definitely interchangeable for makeup looks!

The champagne lavender shade was very subtle and light upon application. It was plenty pigmented, but the problem is just that it’s not supposed to be a pigmented color, making it perfect for adding to the inner corners of the eyes or the brow bone.

Overall, I highly recommend these Maybelline EyeStudio palettes. Whether you haven’t tried the Color Plush Quad’s yet, or you are interested in these brand new Color Explosion Palette’s, I highly recommend giving them a chance. They contain really richly pigmented, soft eyeshadow shades, and you’ll be reaching for them often. The only downside to this product for me was the price, because I love these so much that I’d like to own every single one. At $10.99 a pop, it seemed a bit pricey for me. A great price point was part of the allure of the Color Plush Quad’s that have been around since last year. I’m hoping to score the rest of these palettes on a Maybelline Buy One, Get One 50% off drugstore deal.

Maybelline EyeStudio Color Explosion Eyeshadow Palette in Amethyst Ablazed is available at drugstores nationwide. These are newly released, and are available in several different color combinations from greens to pinks to browns. These will be part of Maybelline’s permanent makeup line!

I love Maybelline shadows. They were some of the first I ever tried. I want to love these palettes because they have awesome colors… I just can’t get past the shape of them… Its the strangest thing!

I agree, too. It’s not as bad when you’re using brushes and dipping them into the colors, but I think it would have been better to go with simple circle/square pans, as well!

Are you planning on doing a look with these? I would love to see what you come up with! And I’m curious how well the glitter top coat looks and applies over the shadows.

I am planning a look with this, actually. I realized that I should show what it all looks like, especially the glittery top coat. I’ll try to get one up today or tomorrow :)

This is a nice dupe of Lancome Amethyst Glam Color Design Palette. Probably blends better too.

Hello: I love the Maybelline Eye Colour Studio Explosion series. Amazing, since I’m used to purchasing Lancome and Chanel colours.

The most expensive I’ve seen these shadows is $8.99 at Target in the Richmond, VA area. I purchased mine at Walgreen’s in Richmond for $7.99. Amazing prices for excellent shadows!
