While I wasn’t around in the 1920’s – 1950’s, I do know a lot about vintage makeup (and I just LOVE vintage makeup ads). Back then, they had what is known as “cake mascara.” It was literally pigment mixed with oils and patted into a container. It included a brush that you then dipped into the cake product and brushed onto your lashes. Enter Avon Mega Effects Mascara, a brand new, innovative mascara that modernizes the application of cake mascara from vintage days. I’ve got tons of photographs inside, my review, and a before and after!

Above is what cake mascara looked like. I absolutely love looking at vintage makeup and vintage makeup ads. I found a random museum here where I live that has vintage makeup advertisements behind glass, and I spent forever looking at them and reading them. I find it to be so fascinating, how far makeup products have come and yet how similar a lot of the products still are.
Isn’t that photograph just stunning? Sigh. So gorgeous.
I actually first saw the Avon Mega Effects Mascara in one of my fashion and beauty magazines. I knew I wanted to try it as soon as I could!
The actual mascara tube is not a tube at all! It has oblong packaging that opens up into a red applicator that has a gripper on it.
The gripper that you hold twists back and forth so that you can control the angle at which the applicator is when you’re applying your mascara. I LOVE this feature because there are so many different angles that our eyes have and if I need to do my upper lashes and my bottom lashes, I’m going to need to hold the applicator in a different way.
When you pull on the applicator handle, out pops the mascara. It’s not a wand, but a “Wonderbrush” that reaches from your inner lashes to your outer lashes perfectly. The extra surface of the bristles claims to apply 40% more mascara to your lashes.
The actual mascara that the Wonderbrush comes out of is fantastic. It grabs the brush and takes off any excess mascara so you’re not left with huge clumps of mascara on your wand. It’s really a very unique and fascinating product.
So when it came time to apply it, I did feel a little intimidated at first. I wasn’t scared to stick the applicator up to my eye, but I was more concerned that I wouldn’t “get” the application down right. It’s a little different than your traditional mascara wand.
Holding it to your lash line, you start at the roots of your lashes and wiggle it through to the end of your lashes. Immediately, you will see results. This mascara is very pigmented and very black. It coated my lashes beautifully without clumping them. The mascara felt a little wet at first, but it dried quickly and I was able to put on another coat. Since you can adjust the wand angle, it made it really easy to get the lashes I normally always miss, especially the little baby lashes in the inner corners of my eyes. It coated each and every single lash. I was so impressed!
Applying it to my lower lashes was a cinch as well. I just changed the angle of the brush and swept it from the root to the tips of my lashes. This made my bottom lashes look PHENOMENAL! It separated them and really lengthened them beautifully. Again, I was able to coat even the littlest of lashes. It was basically like “painting” my mascara on, and since the applicator is the length of your eye, you can do it all at once.
I’ve said it a million times, I need mascara. Yes, NEED. I was born a blondie, and my hair is naturally dirty blonde. My eyebrows and eyelashes are light and always have been. They bend in different directions and get lodged into my eyeballs sometimes. Mascara is a must for me.
WHOA! Insta-volume and lashes. This really made my eyes pop.
I was very pleased with the results this mascara gave me. The only downside to this mascara is that you may get a little bit of smudging around your lash line when applying it. I actually kind of like it because it makes my upper lash-line look like I’ve tight-lined my eyes with eyeliner when I haven’t. It gives the illusion of a thicker, darker lash line on top.
And for comparison sake, you can see the dramatic difference above. I have to say that once you get the technique of this mascara down, you’re going to fall in love. It’s a really innovative, unique makeup product, and I adore Avon for bringing vintage back, with a modern twist of course!
Avon Mega Effects Mascara is available from your local Avon representative, as well as from Avon’s website. Each mascara retails for $10.00 USD, making this a great beauty bargain. I can’t wait to sit at my vanity and apply my mascara the modern-vintage way, just like June Lang in the above photograph.
